Information For Caregivers

Caring for an NMERB Member or Retiree?

If you’re caring for an NMERB member or retiree, there are a few things you should know in order to help manage their account and make health care and financial decisions on their behalf.

Authorized Caregivers will need to provide NMERB with documents evidencing the following in order to access the member’s account:

  • Durable Power of Attorney
This will allow you to handle the affairs of your loved one (including medical care and finances) if they become mentally incapacitated.
    – or –
  • Documentation showing court appointed guardianship.

Notifying NMERB of a Member’s Death

It’s very important for a family member, beneficiary, or caregiver to notify NMERB of the death of a retired member. That way NMERB can stop benefit payments and prevent overpayment of benefits.

Beneficiaries may be responsible for repaying NMERB for any overpayments that occur.
